Patterns
Patterns are recurring structural arrangements that the Behaves Well Framework recognizes across intelligent environments. They are not prescriptive designs — they are observed regularities that, when named and understood, help practitioners reason about how an environment behaves. This material is governed by Framework Specification v1.0. Where a conflict exists, the current published Specification is authoritative.
Patterns are recurring structural arrangements observed across intelligent environments. Patterns do not prescribe implementation details. They identify repeatable relationships, behaviors, and organizational structures that appear across multiple contexts.
Patterns may emerge through observation, become validated through evidence, and evolve through the framework governance process.
Asset Intelligence
The pattern by which an intelligent environment maintains awareness of the assets within it — their state, location, history, and relationships — and makes that awareness available to caretakers and occupants within defined boundaries.
Caretaker Delegation
The pattern by which responsibility for specific functions of an intelligent environment is formally delegated from a primary caretaker to one or more secondary caretakers, with defined scope, duration, and accountability.
Presence Awareness
The pattern by which an intelligent environment detects, records, and acts upon the presence of occupants, caretakers, and visitors — adjusting its behavior in accordance with who is present and what their relationship to the environment is.
Notice Architecture
The pattern by which an intelligent environment communicates its state, actions, and intentions to occupants and caretakers — through structured, timely, and appropriately routed notifications that support informed decision-making.
Lifecycle Stewardship
The pattern by which an intelligent environment is managed across its full operational lifecycle — from commissioning through ongoing maintenance to decommissioning — with documented caretaker transitions and preserved operational history.
Identity Resolution
The pattern by which an intelligent environment determines who is present, which identities are relevant, how conflicting or uncertain identity signals are resolved, and how resulting authority, responsibility, privacy, and personalization decisions are applied.
Identity Resolution recognizes that identity is frequently incomplete, inferred, shared, delegated, temporary, or uncertain. The pattern provides a repeatable structure for determining how intelligent environments should behave when identity information is not absolute.
Explanation Chain
The pattern by which observations, context, decisions, actions, recommendations, notifications, and outcomes remain traceable and explainable across time.
Explanation Chain enables intelligent environments to answer: what happened, why it happened, what evidence supported the decision, and what happened next. The pattern supports Explainability, Operational Trust, governance, and accountability.
Context Resolution
The pattern by which an intelligent environment determines which context should govern behavior when multiple valid contexts are simultaneously available.
Context Resolution addresses situations where behavior may be influenced by multiple occupants, locations, activities, schedules, histories, preferences, policies, or environmental conditions. The pattern provides structure for determining which context should take precedence.
Responsibility Assignment
The pattern by which obligations, stewardship relationships, caretaker responsibilities, accountability structures, and delegated authorities are formally associated with environments, assets, services, systems, data, experiences, or other objects of stewardship.
Responsibility Assignment ensures that obligations remain visible, assigned, and accountable throughout their lifecycle.
Framework Specification v1.0 remains the authoritative source for all framework pattern definitions and statuses. Pattern introduction, refinement, validation, and deprecation are governed through the published evidence process.
